University Planning Checklist

Grade 8 to Grade 12

For international students applying anywhere in the world. Tick items as you complete them.

Grade 8 — Build the Foundation

Nothing is formal yet. This year is about habits, curiosity, and understanding the options ahead.

  • Establish consistent study routines and organisation habits
  • Explore a wide range of subjects, clubs, and activities to discover genuine interests
  • Read widely and build strong writing habits
  • Learn how the curriculum pathways at your school work (IB, American, British, and others)
  • Talk as a family about the countries and kinds of universities that might be a fit

Grade 9 — Explore & Establish

In most systems, grades from this year onward appear on your transcript. Start strong and start tracking.

  • Choose courses thoughtfully; challenge yourself where you can succeed
  • Keep an activities log: clubs, sports, volunteering, awards, and hours
  • Explore interests beyond school through summer programmes or projects
  • Learn the basics of how admissions work in the U.S., UK, Canada, and other target countries
  • Build relationships with teachers who may later write recommendations

Grade 10 — Build Your Profile

Depth begins to matter more than breadth. Focus your energy and start early preparation.

  • Take the most rigorous courses appropriate for you (IB, AP, or Honours)
  • Begin light SAT or ACT familiarisation if the U.S. is on your list
  • Deepen two or three activities rather than joining many
  • Start a simple résumé and update it each term
  • Use the summer for a meaningful programme, internship, or independent project
  • Begin an open conversation about possible majors and countries

Grade 11 — The Pivotal Year

This is the year universities look at most closely. Academic performance, testing, and research all come together.

  • Aim for your strongest academic year; predicted grades often come from this work
  • Complete SAT or ACT testing if applying to the U.S.; register early for test dates
  • Research universities and build a balanced list across reach, match, and safety options
  • Attend virtual and in-person university fairs and information sessions
  • Ask teachers for recommendations before the end of the year
  • Draft the personal statement (UK) or personal essay (U.S.) over the summer
  • Map deadlines for every country on your list, including early rounds

Grade 12 — Apply & Decide

Execution year. Organisation and deadline management are everything.

  • Finalise the university list and confirm each portal (Common App, UCAS, OUAC, and others)
  • Submit early applications (typically October to November) and regular ones (December to January)
  • Request transcripts, school reports, and recommendation submissions well ahead of deadlines
  • Complete financial aid and scholarship applications alongside admissions
  • Prepare for interviews where required
  • Compare offers carefully: programme fit, cost, location, and support
  • Accept an offer, then handle visas, housing, and enrolment steps
  • UAE Nationals: plan around National Service timelines and deferrals
